Marvin:
[0:04] Hey folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the Articulate Fly, and we're back with another Central PA Fishing Report with George Costa of TCO Fly Shop in State College. How are you, George?
George:
[0:14] I'm amazing as always, Marv. How are you?
Marvin:
[0:15] And as always, I'm just trying to stay out of trouble, and you know, you still doing the rain dance in Central PA?
George:
[0:23] Not so much. I mean, we are pretty much par for the course for seasonal everything right now. We don't really have any rain coming up this week, but we did get a good amount over this past weekend, so streams bumped up a bit.
Everything's back down to seasonal averages, which tends to be low and clear.
Weather has been chilly the past few days, so past two days of fishing kind of shut down a little bit with a little bit of a cold snap we had, but we're going to warm up a little bit here in the next few days, and that should get those fish eating a little more.
On the fishing front, it's been pretty steady, pretty consistent.
We are definitely seeing lots of fish spawning, plenty of reds on all the streams here, so please watch out for them if you're going to go fish.
But olives have been around for dries. There's been a handful of midges that fish have been caught on top of the past week.
Nymphing has been consistent. Egg patterns are really starting to work well, just fish behind deeper slots and pools like that, and there's plenty of fish moving and eating eggs this time of year.
So the fishing is typical fall. bites gonna work but just watch where you're throwing them you don't want to be ripping streamers over reds this time of year and you know if you can it's not a bad time of year to maybe lay off the fish a little bit but if you want to get out there just watch where you step and watch where you're fishing.
Marvin:
[1:39] Yeah and are we cold enough now to kind of fish a little bit later in the morning and find that bite window like say from like 11 to 2 or is it not quite that cold?
George:
[1:49] 100% I think definitely afternoons have been picking up a little bit especially the first couple of weeks when it starts really getting down below freezing which is just what happened this week.
I think that the fish need a little bit of time to adjust for that and letting it warm up a little bit in late morning, early afternoon fishing tends to be a little better.
Those bright blue days like we've got today, low light's always a good thing.
Maybe still find those shade lines, but definitely let the water warm up a little bit. You're going to find fish starting to feed a little more actively as the temps jump up a couple of degrees.
Marvin:
[2:20] Yeah, since they don't drink double espresso or mocha frappuccinos, right?
George:
[2:24] They don't they wish they did though.
Marvin:
[2:27] They'd be my best friend forever Yeah, and so, you know, I know you're kind of on the front end of steelhead season What are you hearing from the folks kind of up on steelhead alley?
George:
[2:36] No, it's been pretty good up there from what I hear. We've got a couple of guys out there today.
There's plenty of steelhead starting to come in. They've been catching them for the past couple of weeks.
Salmon are definitely on their way out there, you know, zombified right now for the most part, but steelhead are coming in.
So that's definitely a great fishery this time of year. Go fight the crowds and see the circus up there on the year, your New York trips.
But fish are big, but there's a lot of people out there.
Marvin:
[2:59] Yeah, it's always amazing. Like you get up at like four third and you walk in to get your spot and you walk out at the end of the day and you walk through like 300 people.
George:
[3:05] Pretty much, you know, it is a zoo.
Marvin:
[3:10] Yeah, a very intimate fishery.
George:
[3:11] Indeed.
Marvin:
[3:14] This is so folks, you know, we love questions at the articulate fly.
